During the 1960s, chief radio broadcasters in the United Kingdom held a monopoly over the propagation of popular music. In a broadcasting sphere where the growing demand for rock n’ roll wasn’t met, music enthusiasts needed to turn the tides. Through the occupation of offshore ships and abandoned sea forts, pirate radio provided a new alternative to listening.
The first pirate radio station—Radio Caroline—set sail off the coast of Essex in 1964. Catering to over 25 million listeners, Radio Caroline became the voice of an era.
Harbouring Rock, a maritime pirate radio event, will take Radio Caroline back to sea. With a live broadcast on the ship, radio veterans will celebrate 50 years of Caroline’s dedication to the broadcasting community. Attendees can expect to board Radio Caroline’s original ship (the Ross Revenge) and welcome back notable pirate disc jockeys such as Johnny Walker and Robbie Dale as the evening's hosts. Samples of classic 60s rock and pop will fill the air, and reproductions of Caroline’s historical print material will be available for purchase.

The visual identity supports the brand's concept through its energetic use of color, texture, imagery, and typography. Design choices focused on resurfacing elements of the 60s; this included archival imagery, maritime serifs, accented colors, noisy illustrations, and radio wave motifs.
