Park Notes

Packaging & Editorial Design

An educational-interactive field guide series encouraging urban students & educators to explore their local neighborwoods.

Exploring Our Local Neighborwoods

The Background

In an environment where avenues carve canyons and traffic lights are trailheads, there’s a transformed ecosystem. It’s a common misconception that only the ‘natural’ environment is suitable for study. Naturally, those who don’t see green fields, lakes, and mountains feel foreign to the organic. Despite this, wildlife is amongst urban spaces and creates a unique ecological relationship with its inhabitants.

Park Notes uses a series of interactive content, including games, puzzles, and quizzes, to encourage relationships between young learners and their urban green spaces.

Creating a Voice for Multiple Audiences

Park Notes simultaneously speaks to educators, parents, and children (ages 8-11). The visual and verbal language is tailored to make learning accessible, easy, and engaging. Whether in the classroom or at home, the colorful illustrations and step-by-step activities are designed for parents, teachers, and students to create their own adventure.

Services: Art Direction, Brand Identity, Editorial, Advertising, & UX Design

Readers will have the opportunity to navigate three ecosystems in Central Park: the East Meadow, the South Pond, and the North Woods. Each activity book features curriculum-based learning exercises guided by our urban buds (Travis the Turtle, Amelia the Squirrel, and Flo the Bird).

Design choices include playful serifs, higher point sizes, colorful photography, hand-drawn illustrations, and youthful textures to invite students on after-school adventures.

With our field guides in hand, students, teachers, and parents are ready to explore.
